Fernley, on I-80 east of Reno, has about 24,200 residents and almost 8,800 households. About 28 percent rent and 72 percent own, and the median home was built in 2001, so this is largely a newer community with fewer older residents than most. ## A family-centered move With a median age near 36, a senior move in Fernley is often part of a family decision: a grandparent joining a household, or one moving to be closer to children. About 16 percent of residents moved in the past year. The crew works with the family on what goes where. ## The I-80 drive Fernley is about 39 miles from the Sparks warehouse, roughly 63 minutes via I-80 and US 50 Alternate. The distance matters, so the estimator builds in time for travel. Vault storage in Sparks is a short trip back on I-80. ## Newer homes A 2001 home typically has a planned layout and a two-car garage. Moves from such homes are often smooth because rooms are open and floors are level. Packing is still the largest task. ## A shared bedroom or a smaller apartment When a parent moves in with family, a bedroom must hold what used to fill a house. Our [downsizing guide](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/downsizing-for-seniors/) and [inventory builder](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/tools/inventory-builder/) help decide what comes along. ## The numbers behind the move Fernley has about 8,800 households, and the median home value is about $366,700. A senior who owns there may have equity to put toward a smaller place or a care community, and a senior who rents may be changing apartments. About 28 percent of homes are rented. ## Packing for a shared home When a parent moves in with a son or daughter, space is the main limit. The crew can pack and move a bedroom's worth of belongings, label every box by room, and place furniture where the family wants it. Items that do not fit can ride to a vault in Sparks. See [packing services](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/packing/). ## Keeping medical and legal papers close Put medicines, insurance cards, wills, deeds and account papers in a bag that stays with a family member, not on the truck. After the move, the USPS Mover's Guide handles the change of address, and the family can update the rest. ## Mobility, hearing and vision Older movers sometimes need a calm, uncluttered path through the day. Let the crew lead know about walkers, oxygen equipment or hearing needs, and they will keep the walkway clear and explain each step before it happens. ## Booking Call 775-359-6683 on a weekday between 8 am and 5 pm. F Francie H. February 20, 2026 We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future. ### Owner's reply Francie, Thank you for this amazing review.
