Many households here shop, work and see doctors in Reno, so a move to the Truckee Meadows is a familiar step. This page covers the two towns we serve and the paperwork that comes with crossing the line. ## Susanville is the larger town, with about 3,800 households. Susanville is the Lassen County seat, at 4,362 feet, on US 395 and CA 36. The route from Sparks follows US 395 for about 64 miles, a stretch of high desert that takes roughly 106 minutes. The Census median home value in Susanville is about $236,000, and about 54 percent of households own their homes. Reno is the nearest large city for most of these households. A typical household move is planned as one day on the road with the crew, with packing done earlier if you want it. Ask the estimator about the packing options when you book. ## Portola is smaller and closer, in the Feather River country. Portola has about 1,000 households and sits at 4,975 feet in Plumas County. The 49.4-mile drive to Sparks uses US 395 and CA 70, and the Census puts the median home value near $231,000. About 10 percent of the housing units are seasonal or recreational, the highest share on this page, which fits a town of cabins and second homes. Seasonal owners can store furniture in our Sparks vaults, from $40 per month, while a cabin is closed up or being listed. ## A move from California into Nevada is an interstate move. Because the move crosses the state line, federal rules apply even when the distance is under a hundred miles. The carrier must provide a written estimate, an inventory and a bill of lading, and the FMCSA publishes the rights you hold as a customer in its Protect Your Move guide. O'Brien's is registered with the FMCSA under U.S. DOT No. 30611 and MC-109375 for interstate household goods moves. For a move from northeastern California to somewhere farther away, such as the Midwest or the East Coast, the Bekins network carries the shipment. O'Brien's has been a Bekins agent since 1955. For the far end of the move, call the office and we will explain how your move is booked. ## Winter driving shapes the calendar. US 395 and CA 36 are high roads and snow is part of life. Check Caltrans QuickMap and the National Weather Service forecast before moving day, and call the office at 775-359-6683 if the weather changes the plan. The delivery window comes from your written estimate. ## Next step: a free estimate. Request a phone ballpark, send the online request, or ask for the free in-home estimate that comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. The estimate is itemized and in writing, and long-distance moves are priced by weight. ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [FMCSA, Protect Your Move](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move) - [eCFR, 49 CFR Part 375 (household goods moves)](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-III/subchapter-B/part-375) - [Caltrans QuickMap](https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/) ### Free in-home estimate - An O'Brien's estimator walks through your home - A written, itemized estimate - 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep [How our estimates work](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/how-our-estimates-work/) ### Visit or call the office 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks, NV 89431 [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) | Monday to Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | | --- | --- | | Saturday and Sunday | Closed | [Get my free estimate](#estimate) ### Related - [Movers in Susanville](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/susanville/) - [Movers in Portola](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/portola/) - [Long-distance moving as a Bekins agent](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/) - [Free in-home moving estimate (plus 10 free heavy-duty boxes)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/free-estimate/) Answers ## Questions people ask Still have a question?
