Northwest Reno and Somersett grew up in the 1990s and 2000s, and the Census figures for this ZIP reflect it: 16,342 households, a median of 5.5 rooms, and a housing stock that is almost entirely newer than the rest of the city. The drive from our Sparks yard is about 8.5 miles and 14 minutes, mostly on I-80. ## What newer homes mean for packing A house built after 1990 usually has an open plan, a large kitchen, walk-in closets and a two or three car garage. There are fewer built-in cabinets to empty and more rooms with open floor space, so a crew spends less time on small awkward spaces and more on volume. The home mix backs this up: about 6,000 three-bedroom homes, close to 3,600 with four bedrooms and roughly 4,500 two-bedroom units. ## Families, closets and the garage Many of these households have children, which means toys, sports gear, bikes and furniture that has been moved from room to room. The garage is the biggest single room in a newer house and the one that takes most people by surprise. Our estimator measures it at the in-home visit and plans the cartons and the time for it. ## Apartments and townhomes in the ZIP About 64 percent of homes are single-family detached, so a good share are townhomes, condos or apartments. Smaller units are packed with smaller, lighter cartons and a plan for the stairs and the parking. See [apartment and condo moves](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/local-moving/apartments-and-condos/). ## Pack for the move date, not the calendar Closing dates and lease dates decide when the house has to be empty. The packing day is scheduled backward from the truck date, with the full pack usually done the day before loading. If the new home is not ready, the cartons can go straight to a vault, and [storage between homes](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/storage-between-moves/) keeps them until the keys are in hand. ## Options on the estimate - Full pack of every room - Kitchen, pictures and fragile items only - Box packing only, ahead of a move or storage - Packing into your own sturdy boxes ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates](https://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets/acs-5year.html) - [FMCSA, Protect Your Move](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move) ### Free in-home estimate - An O'Brien's estimator walks through your home - A written, itemized estimate - 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep [How our estimates work](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/how-our-estimates-work/) ### Visit or call the office 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks, NV 89431 [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) | Monday to Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | | --- | --- | | Saturday and Sunday | Closed | [Get my free estimate](#estimate) ### Related - [Professional packing services](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/packing/) - [Full packing service](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/packing/full-packing/) - [Short-term storage between homes (storage in transit)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/storage-between-moves/) - [Movers in Northwest Reno and Somersett (89523)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/northwest-reno-somersett/) Nearby ## The same service in nearby towns - [Packing services in South Reno and Damonte Ranch (89521)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-reno-damonte-ranch/packing/) - [Packing services in Galena, Montreux and the Mt. Call [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683), Mon-Fri 8-5, or see the [moving FAQ](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/faq/). ### Do newer homes pack faster? Often they do, because there are fewer built-ins and odd corners, but a full garage and large closets add volume. The estimate reflects the contents, not the age of the house. ### Can you pack and move in one day? For smaller homes the crew can pack in the morning and load in the afternoon. Larger homes are usually split across two days. ### What does the crew do with the empty cartons? Ask your estimator what to do with spare cartons when you book, and the plan goes onto the estimate. ## 4.3 stars from 71 Google reviews What customers say about O'Brien's [Read more reviews](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/reviews/)[See them on Google](https://maps.google.com/maps?cid=17335326057105140938) M Mark S.
