South Lake Tahoe sits at 6,260 feet on the California shore of the lake, next to the Nevada casinos of Stateline. Three quarters of its homes were built before 1980, half its households rent, and more than a third of units are second homes. It is a town of small older homes, condos and cabins. ## Older homes and rentals The median year built is 1973, and 73.7 percent of homes went up before 1980. Older Tahoe homes often have narrow stairs, low ceilings and split levels, and the estimator checks every access point. With nearly half of households renting, lease dates and parking are the main planning issues; see [apartment and condo moves](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/local-moving/apartments-and-condos/). The median gross rent is about 1,600 dollars a month, the Census says, which is one reason moves in and out are frequent. ## Second homes and seasonal moves With 36 percent of units seasonal, South Lake Tahoe moves include cabins opened for summer and closed for winter. Delivery, placement and storage matter; see [white-glove delivery](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/white-glove-delivery/) and [storage for South Lake Tahoe households](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/storage/). Vault storage starts at $40 per month. ## The route over the mountains The route is I-580 to Carson City, then US 50 up and over the Sierra, as the fact block shows. Because South Lake Tahoe is in California, a move to or from Nevada is an interstate move under federal authority. Winter storms can close or slow US 50, and chain controls are common; Caltrans posts conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov. See the [winter moving guide](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-winter/). ## Condos, cabins and lakeside parking Many South Lake Tahoe homes are condos or small cabins on narrow lots, where the truck may not be able to park at the door. The estimator notes the distance from the truck to the front door and the number of steps, and asks whether the complex needs advance notice or a reserved loading space. A small shuttle truck can be added for tight streets. Tell the estimator if the home is a vacation rental, because furniture there is often matched sets that need careful wrapping. ## Services in South Lake Tahoe - [Packing](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/packing/) for condos and cabins - [Senior moves and downsizing](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/senior-moving/) - [Office moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/office-moving/) for lakeside businesses - [Long-distance moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/long-distance/) through Bekins - [Stateline](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/stateline/), just across the border, is served too ## Starting an estimate Call 775-359-6683 or send the form. August 28, 2024 Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move. ### Owner's reply Michelle, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We are so happy to hear about the move experience you had with our company and glad to know we met your expectations! It means a lot to us to know that. Thank you for choosing us as your moving partner. S Sonia P. August 4, 2023 Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!! ## Get your free, in-home moving estimate An estimator visits, walks through everything and gives you a written, itemized estimate.
