Tahoe City is the north-west shore hub, and the data above uses the Census place Sunnyside-Tahoe City. It shows a place where most units are second homes, the Census median home value is about $1 million and the housing was built mostly in the 1960s and 1970s. The move starts in California, which sets the rules too. ## Reading the Tahoe City data Of roughly 2,355 housing units, 1,560 are seasonal or recreational, while about 673 households live here full time. Of those households, 70 percent own and 30 percent rent. Only about 9 percent of residents moved in the past year, which suggests a settled core of owners plus a steady turnover of second homes and rentals. A median year built of 1973 and a share of homes older than 1980 near 69 percent mean wooden decks, steep stairs and multi-level layouts built into slopes. The estimator will note stair counts and carry distances on the inventory. ## A move that crosses the state line Tahoe City is in Placer County, California. Moving from Tahoe City to Reno or Sparks crosses the state line, so it is an interstate move under O'Brien's federal authority, USDOT 30611 and MC-109375. A move inside California between two California towns is covered separately. The written estimate states which applies. The 52.1 mile route runs 34 miles on I-80 and 15 miles on CA 89 along the Truckee River, about 71 minutes in free flow. ## CA 89 and Sierra weather The river canyon section of CA 89 and the I-80 grade near Truckee are subject to chain controls and closures in storms. Look at Caltrans QuickMap before the truck rolls and keep a weather day available. The [winter moving guide](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-winter/) lists what to have ready, including a cleared path to the door. ## Services for Tahoe City - [Packing](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/packing/) for second-home contents - [Vault storage](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/storage/) in Sparks from $40 per month, ideal for off-season furniture - [Senior moves](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/senior-moving/) and downsizing - [White-glove delivery](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/white-glove-delivery/) to lake houses ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates](https://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets/acs-5year.html) - [Placer County, California](https://www.placer.ca.gov/) - [Caltrans QuickMap road conditions](https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/) ### Free in-home estimate - An O'Brien's estimator walks through your home - A written, itemized estimate - 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep [How our estimates work](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/how-our-estimates-work/) ### Visit or call the office 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks, NV 89431 [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) | Monday to Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | | --- | --- | | Saturday and Sunday | Closed | [Get my free estimate](#estimate) ### Related - [Lake Tahoe and Truckee](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/lake-tahoe-and-truckee/) - [Movers in Truckee](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/truckee/) - [Movers in Kings Beach](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/kings-beach/) - [How an interstate move works with a Bekins agent](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/how-interstate-moves-work/) ## Services in Sunnyside-Tahoe City 4 - [### Packing services in Tahoe City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/packing/) - [### Storage for Tahoe City households](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/storage/) - [### Senior moves and downsizing in Tahoe City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/senior-moving/) - [### White-glove furniture delivery in Tahoe City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/tahoe-city/white-glove-delivery/) Nearby ## Other towns in this area - [Movers in Kings Beach](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/kings-beach/) - [Movers in South Lake Tahoe](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/south-lake-tahoe/) - [Movers in Incline Village](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/incline-village/) - [Movers in Stateline](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/stateline/) - [Movers in Zephyr Cove](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/zephyr-cove/) - [Movers in Truckee](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/truckee/) - [Movers in Reno](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/reno/) - [Movers in Sparks](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/sparks/) - [Lake Tahoe and Truckee](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/lake-tahoe-and-truckee/) Moves within California ## Permitted in California O'Brien's Moving & Storage moves households within California under its own authority: Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's). A move between Nevada and California crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move under our federal authority (U.S. DOT No. 30611, MC-109375) instead.
