Virginia City is the oldest-feeling place in our service area, and the numbers above show it: the median house dates to 1956, essentially every household owns, and the elevation puts it above Reno by about 1,600 feet. Moving here is a question of grades, narrow streets and old buildings. ## What a 1956 housing stock means for a move Virginia City counts about 336 households and a median year built of 1956, with many homes far older than that. Older houses bring narrow doorways, steep staircases, low basement clearances and, in places, porches that were never meant for a loaded dolly. The estimator will measure the tight spots and tell you which large pieces need disassembly. Historic character cuts both ways. Properties in the town's landmark district may have rules about exterior changes and curb use; ask your property contact about parking before the crew arrives. ## The Geiger Grade and SR 341 From Sparks the route climbs on SR 341, known as the Geiger Grade, after leaving the valley floor near I-580 and US 395 Alternate. The Census-geocoded drive is 24 miles and 37 minutes, but the grade has steep, winding sections and a loaded truck is slower on them than a car. Plan the drive time with margin. Both ends are in Nevada, so the move falls under O'Brien's Nevada authority. ## Winter at 6,107 feet This is the most snow-exposed address in the Truckee Meadows area we serve. Snow and ice arrive earlier and stay later than in Reno, and wind can drift a lane shut. Check Nevada 511 the evening before and the morning of, and keep a flexible date in winter. The checklist at [moving in winter in the Sierra](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-winter/) applies here in full. ## Antiques, collections and storage Many older Comstock homes hold antiques, mirrors and display cabinets. O'Brien's wraps and crates fine art and antiques; see [fine art and antiques](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/specialty-moving/fine-art-and-antiques/). When the new home is not ready, vault storage in the Sparks warehouse is from $40 per month, and the crew can deliver to the new address on a date you set. ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates](https://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets/acs-5year.html) - [Storey County, Nevada](https://www.storeycounty.org/) - [Nevada 511 road conditions (NDOT)](https://www.nvroads.com/) ### Free in-home estimate - An O'Brien's estimator walks through your home - A written, itemized estimate - 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep [How our estimates work](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/how-our-estimates-work/) ### Visit or call the office 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks, NV 89431 [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) | Monday to Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | | --- | --- | | Saturday and Sunday | Closed | [Get my free estimate](#estimate) ### Related - [Reno, Sparks and the Truckee Meadows](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/truckee-meadows/) - [Fine art and antique moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/specialty-moving/fine-art-and-antiques/) - [Storage for Virginia City households](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/virginia-city/storage/) - [Moving in winter in the Sierra](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-winter/) ## Services in Virginia City 3 - [### Packing services in Virginia City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/virginia-city/packing/) - [### Storage for Virginia City households](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/virginia-city/storage/) - [### Senior moves and downsizing in Virginia City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/virginia-city/senior-moving/) Nearby ## Other towns in this area - [Movers in Carson City](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/carson-city/) - [Movers in North Carson City (89706)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/north-carson-city/) - [Movers in West Carson City (89703)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/west-carson-city/) - [Movers in Minden](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/minden/) - [Movers in Gardnerville](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/gardnerville/) - [Movers in Gardnerville Ranchos](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/gardnerville-ranchos/) - [Movers in Genoa](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/genoa/) - [Movers in Johnson Lane](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/johnson-lane/) - [Carson City and the Carson Valley](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/areas/carson-city-and-carson-valley/) Answers ## Movers in Virginia City questions Still have a question? Call [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683), Mon-Fri 8-5, or see the [moving FAQ](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/faq/). ### How far is Virginia City from your office? 24 miles and about 37 minutes of free-flow driving from 2277 Glendale Ave in Sparks, via SR 341 and I-580. The Geiger Grade makes it slower for a loaded truck. ### Can your trucks handle Virginia City's narrow streets? The estimator checks access when visiting. Where a full-size truck cannot turn, the crew can park on a wider street and carry the load. ### Do you move antiques? Yes. O'Brien's wraps, crates and moves antiques and fine art, and itemizes them on the inventory and condition report before packing. ## 4.3 stars from 71 Google reviews What customers say about O'Brien's [Read more reviews](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/reviews/)[See them on Google](https://maps.google.com/maps?cid=17335326057105140938) F Francie H. February 20, 2026 We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future. ### Owner's reply Francie, Thank you for this amazing review. The result you have expressed is exactly what we all strive to accomplish. I love that you walked away knowing you are now a part of the O'Brien's family, whenever you need us we are a phone call away! I will let the movers know about the kind words expressed about them, that will be very satisfying for all of them. We will look forward to any referrals you send our way, thank you for the opportunity! M Mark S. January 22, 2026 Great company and local. They take great care of your moving needs.
