Virginia City, the historic Comstock mining town in Storey County, counts about 640 residents in some 340 households. At 6,107 feet and about 24 miles from our warehouse, it is close to Sparks, but it has its own access challenges. ## Homes with history A median build year of 1956 means homes with narrow doorways, steep stairs and small closets. The Census estimate shows nearly all households owning their homes. These houses may contain decades of keepsakes, so the sorting step is as important as the moving step. ## Steep streets, careful loading Hills and narrow streets matter for a truck. The estimator looks at the street, the slope and where the truck can park, and may plan a shuttle. The drive from Sparks is about 24 miles and 37 minutes via SR 341. Winter weather at this elevation can change a schedule; see [moving in winter](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-winter/). ## Fragile and antique furniture Antiques, framed art and glass go through the same wrapping and padding as modern goods, and the condition report notes what each piece looks like. See [fine art and antique moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/specialty-moving/fine-art-and-antiques/). ## Moving down the hill Some residents move to Reno or Sparks to be nearer to services. The warehouse in Sparks, close at hand, means vault storage is easy to reach. See [estate and downsizing storage](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/estate-and-downsizing-storage/). ## A small town with a small household count With about 336 households, Virginia City is a small town by households, and the Census estimates carry wide margins at that size. What the numbers confirm is the age of the housing stock, which is old, and an older population. Each house is its own case, so the estimator's visit matters more here than any average. ## Preparing the home for the crew Clear the pathways, take rugs up, and remove anything fragile from the stairs. If your house has a steep front step or a boardwalk, mention it. The crew uses pads and runners to protect old floors and doorways. Pack medicines, papers and valuables yourself and keep them with you. ## Why storage near Sparks fits Because the warehouse is only 24 miles away, vaulted furniture is never far. If you are unsure about a smaller home in Reno or Sparks, you can try the move with fewer pieces and keep the rest in storage from $40 per month. ## Setting the date with the season Late spring through early fall is the easiest stretch for steep streets. If winter is the only window, the estimator and office watch the forecast with you and keep a backup day open. ## Starting the plan Call 775-359-6683 on a weekday.
