A pickup spread is the range of days, agreed in advance, in which the mover may load your goods. A single day is easy to understand, and a spread is a range with a first and last day. Both need to be in writing. ## How a spread is set You and the mover agree on the pickup dates when the move is booked. The FMCSA booklet puts the responsibility squarely on the customer to settle the dates or the timeframe, and it advises against agreeing to pickup or delivery as soon as possible because the dates you agree on should be definite. Once loading begins, the mover is bound to the service described in the bill of lading. The federal rules call this the agreed date or period of time for pickup. A spread is simply a period of more than one day. ## Spreads in other kinds of moves The idea is not limited to household moves. Military OneSource explains that for most government-arranged household goods shipments a spread of seven calendar days is the window in which the moving company must pick up, and that the mover must confirm the pickup date in writing within three calendar days of accepting the shipment. Those are the government's own program rules and they do not govern a civilian move. The shared principle is the same: a written window, set early. Booking for military moves goes through the installation transportation office and the Defense Personal Property System. ## Living with a pickup window Treat the whole window as reserved. Finish packing before its first day, keep access clear for the crew and avoid scheduling your own closing or utility shutoff for the very first morning of it. If a crew can load sooner than expected, the estimator or dispatcher will call, and an open schedule lets you say yes. At O'Brien's, the Sparks office takes the dates you need into the estimate. Most movers can adjust when it does not disrupt other shipments, but the booklet notes the mover is not required to change dates. ### Does a pickup spread apply to a move within Nevada? Moves inside Nevada follow Nevada Transportation Authority rules and the tariff approved under CPCN 1070.
