# Moving a parent to assisted living

Bring the familiar things first: the chair, the bed linens, the photographs and the clock, set up in the new room before your parent arrives. Move the room in one day, and take the time to sort, sell or store the rest of the old home afterward.

Moving a parent into assisted living is both a practical task and a family event. The room is usually one room, so the choices about what goes are real choices. A move that is calm and that feels like home on the first night makes the first weeks easier for everyone. This guide separates the work into the room, the move day and the old home.

## Start with the new room

Ask the community for the room measurements, and for a list of what it supplies and what residents bring. Draw a plan and place the bed, a favorite chair, a small table and a dresser. Add wall art, family photos, a clock and the bedspread that looks like home. Bring only what fits, and leave floor space for a walker or wheelchair.

Label every item with the resident's name. Most communities ask for that, and it helps if things are moved between rooms.

## Choose what comes

- Clothes for two weeks, with name labels, and a few outfits for special days.
- Medications and papers stay with the family or the nurse, not on a truck.
- A phone and a charger, glasses, hearing aids and a spare set of each.
- A few books, a radio or music player and a hobby kit.
- The items your parent asks for by name. Ask before deciding.

## Plan the move day around your parent

Choose a time of day when your parent is at their best. Have a family member set up the room while another stays with your parent, so they arrive to a finished room. Keep the day short and quiet. A crew that has done senior moves before understands the pace. O'Brien's [senior moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/senior-moving/) help covers packing, moving and placing furniture in the new room.

Reserve the elevator or loading area with the community in advance. Many communities ask movers to confirm their insurance and the time window.

## Think about money and coverage

Medicare does not usually pay for long-term custodial care, and the program explains what it covers on its long-term care page. Eldercare Locator, a federal service, and Nevada's Aging and Disability Services Division can help families find programs and social workers who explain the options. This guide does not give legal or financial advice, so ask an elder-law attorney or a benefits counselor when questions come up.

## Deal with the old home later

After the move comes the larger job: the house or apartment. Take time before you decide what to keep. Vault storage from $40 per month gives the family room to decide without a deadline. See [downsizing for seniors](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/downsizing-for-seniors/), [handling an estate move](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/estate-moves/) and [estate and downsizing storage](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/estate-and-downsizing-storage/).

## The first weeks

Visit often at first, bring a meal or a project, and learn the staff. Ask the community how it supports new residents. Many parents adjust in a few weeks, and some need longer. Keep notes on what helps.

Usually yes. Set up the room first so your parent arrives to a finished space.

### Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

Medicare generally does not cover long-term custodial care. Its long-term care page explains what it does cover.
