Four lists cover it: what goes, what stays, who is notified, and what the move will need. or call [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) [4.3 on Google · 71 reviews](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/reviews/) Family owned since 1941 [U.S. DOT No. 30611](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/about/licenses-and-authority/) A move after a separation is both a logistics job and an emotional one. The practical parts can be made simple with clear lists and clear dates. Take the decisions in the right order, and let a third party do the heavy lifting so that neither of you has to be in the room with the boxes. ## List one: what goes and what stays Make a written inventory room by room, with each item marked for one household or the other, and keep a copy each. Photographs of valuables, with dates, help later. If a court order or agreement sets out who keeps what, the inventory should follow it. Ask your attorney or the court's self-help centre if anything is unclear. ## List two: who is notified File a change of address with the post office, and update your bank, insurance, employer, doctor, schools and any subscriptions. If your name changes, the Social Security Administration comes first, then the DMV and passport. The USPS Mover's Guide and the SSA name-change page are the starting points. Use [the change of address checklist](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/change-of-address-checklist/) to keep track. ## List three: timing Choose a move date that fits the legal and housing timeline. Ask for a written estimate with the date, the services and the contents of the load. If a new home is not ready, storage between homes can bridge the gap; O'Brien's offers vault storage from $40 per month, and about 2 to 3 weeks notice is needed to ship stored goods. See [storage between moves](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/storage-between-moves/). ## List four: the move itself A professional crew follows the inventory, loads only what is marked, and can work while the other household is away. Ask the estimator to treat the list as the scope of the job. For help with single pieces, see [in-home furniture moving](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/in-home-furniture-moving/). If downsizing is part of the change, [downsizing](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/downsizing-for-seniors/) has tips on sorting. ## Looking after yourself Keep the first night simple: bed made, a few meals, essentials in one place. Pack a [first night box](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/first-night-box/) and ask friends for specific help, such as an hour of unpacking or a meal. ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [USPS, Mover's Guide](https://moversguide.usps.com/) - [Social Security Administration, Change Name with Social Security](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/) - [FMCSA, Protect Your Move](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move) ### Free in-home estimate - An O'Brien's estimator walks through your home - A written, itemized estimate - 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep [How our estimates work](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/how-our-estimates-work/) ### Visit or call the office 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks, NV 89431 [775-359-6683](tel:+17753596683) | Monday to Friday | 8:00 am to 5:00 pm | | --- | --- | | Saturday and Sunday | Closed | [Get my free estimate](#estimate) ### Related - [Change-of-address checklist](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/change-of-address-checklist/) - [Short-term storage between homes (storage in transit)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/storage-between-moves/) - [The moving inventory and high-value items form](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-inventory/) - [What goes in a first-night box](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/first-night-box/) Moving guides ## Read next - [Moving in together](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-in-together/) - [Moving out of your parents' house](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-out-of-your-parents-house/) - [Moving while pregnant](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-while-pregnant/) - [Moving on a budget (without cutting corners)](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-on-a-budget/) - [Moving by yourself: what to hand off](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-alone/) - [Moving to a new state checklist](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-to-a-new-state-checklist/) - [Packing checklist](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/packing-checklist/) - [Moving-day checklist](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/guides/moving-day-checklist/) Answers ## Questions people ask Still have a question? F Francie H. February 20, 2026 We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future. ### Owner's reply Francie, Thank you for this amazing review.
