The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry runs the review of personal effects shipments, and a household can arrive faster or slower depending on how clearly it was described on paper. O'Brien's Moving & Storage plans moves abroad through Bekins and partner international carriers; the points here come from the department's published guidance for people moving or returning. ## Who the personal effects route is for The department says returning residents and new residents moving by sea or air freight can bring personal effects. The goods must be your own property and must have been owned while you were overseas. A shipment of items bought online or commercial goods follows different rules, so decide early which part of the home counts as personal effects. ## The B534 and the packing list The department assesses the B534 form together with the packing list for biosecurity risk, and that assessment decides how much of the shipment is inspected. A packing list that names each item clearly gives the officer something to read. Vague entries such as miscellaneous or household invite questions. Treat the two documents as a pair: the form states who you are and what is traveling, and the list shows the contents box by box. - Describe wooden items, outdoor gear, tools and plant-based decor by what they are. - Number every carton and match it to the list. - Keep a copy of the form and the list with your travel papers. ## What can happen to an item The department states that some items may need treatment, and others may be destroyed or exported at the owner's expense if they do not meet the import conditions. For that reason it recommends checking the Biosecurity Import Conditions system, known as BICON, if you are unsure whether an item is allowed in. The sensible time to run that check is before packing, not on arrival. An item left behind in Sparks storage costs less trouble than an item that fails inspection in Australia. ## Deciding what ships A household often splits three ways: items that ship, items that stay in vault storage here, and items that are sold or donated. O'Brien's vault storage starts from $40 per month, and the wooden vaults measure 7 ft x 7 ft x 5 ft, which suits the furniture and keepsakes you plan to bring home later. Stored goods ship with about 2 to 3 weeks notice. ## How O'Brien's builds the paperwork trail The packing list is easier to write when someone has already counted the home. O'Brien's prepares an itemized inventory and condition report before packing, and the written estimate is itemized and in writing. The free in-home estimate includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes.
