The office's new-resident page describes driving on a valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days or until it expires, then getting an Illinois license at a Secretary of State facility. Check the Secretary of State site before you go, since the license wording is a summary and offices change their appointment rules. ## A flat tax and a layered sales tax The Illinois Department of Revenue lists 4.95 percent as the individual income tax rate and 6.25 percent as the general merchandise sales tax rate, with a lower rate for qualifying food and drugs. Local sales taxes add on top. Nevada has no state personal income tax, so the Illinois paycheck will lose 4.95 percent to the state. ## Chicago and downstate Illinois's median home value is 263,300 dollars, its median gross rent is 1,274 dollars a month and its median household income is 83,390 dollars.
