Data (read 2026-10-19): [OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, free-flow drive from 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks](https://project-osrm.org/); [U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates](https://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets/acs-5year.html); [NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/us-climate-normals); [U.S. Census Bureau, State-to-State Migration Flows (ACS 1-year 2024)](https://www.census.gov/topics/population/migration/guidance/state-to-state-migration-flows.html); [U.S. Census Bureau, ACS county-to-county migration flows 2016-2020](https://www.census.gov/topics/population/migration/guidance/county-to-county-migration-flows.html).

Kansas City is the center of a metro area of about 2.2 million people. The Census counts about 870 people a year moving to Washoe County from Johnson County, Kansas, Leavenworth County, Kansas and Cass County, Missouri (2016 to 2020 estimates, with a margin of error), against about 85 a year going the other way. From there the road to Reno is 1,592 miles.

## The drive: 1,592 miles from Sparks to Kansas City

The routing tool puts the road at 1,592 miles and 26 h 42 min with no stops, no traffic and no weather. At 500 miles a day a driver needs four days. The map distance is 1,344 miles, so the road is about 248 miles longer than the crow flies. Your written estimate sets the delivery window; the driving time only describes the road.

By mileage the route reads I-80 for 1,388 miles, I-29 for 137 miles, US 77 for 9 miles and Nebraska Highway 2 for 47 miles. That makes I-80 the road that matters most, at roughly 87 percent.

Kansas City is 1,592 miles from Reno, and its path is distinctive. The route runs north on I-29 for 137 miles toward Omaha, uses 47 miles of Nebraska Highway 2 and 9 miles of US 77, and then takes I-80 for 1,388 miles through Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah. Johnson and Leavenworth counties in Kansas and Cass County in Missouri supply the Census flow to Washoe County.

## Reading the road numbers

Split into 500-mile days, the 1,592 miles make three full days and a last day of about 92 miles. A pace of 60 miles per hour over the free-flow time shows how the figure is built: it assumes steady highway speeds and no stops. The clock changes too: Reno keeps Pacific Time, two hours behind your starting point.

If you follow the truck in your own vehicle, the long I-80 stretch is where fuel, food and rest stops are easiest to find.

## Terrain and weather on the way

Kansas City sits at 742 feet, and the trip ends at about 4,930 feet in Reno. The routing tool lists no named pass. The Missouri River valley and the plains are flat and wide, and wind is the usual concern, along with winter storms in Nebraska and Wyoming. The KanDrive and Nebraska 511 sites are the ones to check.

Before loading day, check the state road-conditions site listed below for the start of the route and the Nevada road map (NDOT) for the finish.

## Timing the trip and planning your own drive

For a 1,592-mile trip, the calendar matters more than the map. Winter storms on the plains and in Wyoming are the usual cause of delays, while June through August fills the schedule with other households, so spring and fall tend to be the calmer choices.

A route that leans on I-80 for 87 percent of its length is easy to follow and easy to delay, so the plan keeps some room in the schedule. If you drive your own vehicle, split the 1,592 miles into four days of about 500 miles and book lodging near the end of each day.

## What changes when you arrive in Reno

Census figures put the median home value in Kansas City at $242,900 and the median rent at $1,238 a month, while Reno city has a median home value of $548,300 and a median rent of $1,556. For household income the Census median in Reno city is $80,760, against $69,166 in Kansas City. The table above puts both ends side by side.

Climate is the change people feel. Kansas City averages about 38 inches of precipitation a year, with a January low of 22.2 and a July high of 90.2 degrees. Reno averages 7.3 inches, with 26.1 and 93.9 degrees and about 21 inches of snow.

Kansas City's July high of 90.2 and January low of 22.2 compare with Reno's 93.9 and 26.1, but Reno gets about 7 inches of precipitation a year against 38 in Kansas City. Median household income is $69,166 in Kansas City and $80,760 in Reno city.

Bekins Van Lines network

## How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. [What being a Bekins agent means](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/about/bekins-agent/).

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
