Madison is Wisconsin's capital, and its housing market is closer to Reno's than most Midwest cities. The cold is the larger change: the weather station records a January low of 11.8 degrees. This page covers the arrival end: climate, Dane County housing, Wisconsin's rules for new residents and how O'Brien's plans the shipment.

## Housing in Madison

The American Community Survey lists a median home value of $372,900 for the city and $372,400 for the Madison metro, nearly equal. Median gross rent is $1,413 in the city and $1,354 in the metro, and median household income is $78,050 and $88,804. Reno's metro medians are $502,300 for a home, $1,592 for rent and $87,485 for income.

About 54 percent of city households rent. A market this close to Reno's means most households bring most of what they own, and the in-home estimate is where to decide on each room.

## A hard winter

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Dane County airport list a January high of 27.0 degrees with a low of 11.8, and a July high of 82.1 with a low of 61.6. Annual precipitation is 37.13 inches and snow averages 51.8 inches. Reno's January high is 47.7.

Cold affects a move in small ways. Cold furniture and electronics should come indoors and sit before they are plugged in. Ask your estimator which items to keep out of the truck on a very cold day.

## Wisconsin's rules for new residents

Wisconsin DMV says that upon establishing residency you must title and register your vehicle, with no grace period stated in days. A regular driver license is due within 60 days, and a commercial license within 30. Plan the vehicle visit first.

Wisconsin's marginal individual income tax rates run from 3.5 percent to 7.65 percent. The state sales tax is 5 percent, and Dane County adds 0.5 percent. Nevada has no individual income tax, so a part-year return deserves a professional's review.

## How the move works with O'Brien's

You book the move with O'Brien's. An estimator comes to your Reno or Sparks home for a free, no-obligation in-home estimate, and 10 free heavy-duty boxes come with it. We coordinate the shipment through the Bekins Van Lines network, and your written estimate sets the delivery window. Read [how an interstate move works with a Bekins agent](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/how-interstate-moves-work/).

If your Madison home is not ready, a wooden vault in our Sparks warehouse, from $40 per month, holds the household, and goods ship on about 2 to 3 weeks of notice.

Bekins Van Lines network

## How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. [What being a Bekins agent means](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/about/bekins-agent/).

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

### Owner's reply

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.
