Phoenix is hot in July, and Arizona is one of the few states with no stated day count for new-resident paperwork. A Reno household arriving in Arizona should plan the motor vehicle visit for the first week rather than the first month. ## Arizona's immediate rule The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division says to register a vehicle brought from another state as soon as you become an Arizona resident, and its driver license manual says to obtain an Arizona license and registration immediately when residency applies. There is no published window of 30 or 60 days like those of Nevada, California or Idaho. Residency triggers include working in Arizona, enrolling a child at resident tuition, or living in the state for more than seven months of a calendar year, so ask the MVD if your situation is unusual. ## Taxes: a flat rate and the TPT The Arizona Department of Revenue's 2026 Form 140ES booklet gives a flat 2.5 percent rate for estimating individual income tax. Arizona's sales tax is called the transaction privilege tax, with a 5.6 percent state rate and county and city rates added. Nevada has no individual income tax and a 6.85 percent statewide minimum sales tax. ## Planning around the heat NOAA's normals for the Phoenix Deer Valley station show a January high of 65.4 and a low of 44.1, a July high of 104.0 and a low of 80.8, and about 8.9 inches of precipitation a year. No snowfall is recorded. Heat changes how a move is packed. Candles, chocolate, medicine, vinyl records and houseplants do not belong in a hot trailer, and fragile electronics are better carried with you. Ask the estimator how a summer delivery is handled, and schedule unloading for the cooler part of the day where the building allows it. ## Phoenix housing in the ACS The city of Phoenix has 1,642,323 residents, a median household income of $81,332, a median gross rent of $1,582 and a median home value of $420,700. Renters are 42.7 percent of households. Across the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro the medians are $1,702 for rent and $440,900 for home value.
