Portland reverses the Nevada tax pattern. Nevada has a sales tax and no income tax; Oregon has the opposite. The Portland metro also crosses the Columbia River into Washington, so the state you land in depends on which side of the river you choose. ## Oregon taxes in reverse The Oregon Department of Revenue states that Oregon has no general sales or use tax. Its 2026 withholding formulas list a top income tax rate of 9.9 percent, with brackets of 4.75, 6.75, 8.75 and 9.9 percent for single filers, the top rate beginning above $125,000. Shopping gets simpler and the paycheck gets different. Census fiscal year 2024 data shows Oregon collected about $9.5 billion in individual income tax and $1.3 billion in general sales tax. Nevada collected no individual income tax in the same survey. ## Registration and license deadlines The State of Oregon's new-resident page says new residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing Oregon residency and replace an out-of-state driver license within 30 days. That is the same window as Nevada's own rule for arrivals. If you settle across the river in Vancouver, the Washington rules apply instead: 30 days for the Washington license and registration, and no wage income tax. ## Portland weather, from NOAA NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Portland International Airport show a January high of 47.5 and low of 36.2, and a July high of 81.9 with a low of 58.5. Annual precipitation is 36.9 inches and snowfall is about 4.2 inches. Winters are mild and wet, summers are warm and dry. The normals show the wet months are concentrated in the cooler part of the year. ## Portland housing numbers The ACS lists 641,165 residents in the city of Portland, median household income of $90,919, median gross rent of $1,655 and a median home value of $581,500. Renters are 48.0 percent of households.
