Salt Lake City is a straight run east on I-80, and it is the closest big-city destination to Reno in climate: cold winters, hot dry summers and high elevation. The state paperwork is where it differs, since Utah has an income tax and counts residency by triggers rather than a single day count. ## Utah's 60 days and residency triggers The Utah DMV says new residents are allowed 60 days to transfer titles and registrations. For driver licenses, the Utah Driver License Division lists conditions that make a Utah license required, such as entering the state to make Utah home, remaining six months or more in a calendar year, registering a vehicle, or being gainfully employed there. It does not publish a single day count. Because the license rule is condition based, the safe plan is to visit the Driver License Division soon after you move. ## Tax rates Utah Code 59-10-104, effective January 1, 2026, sets the individual income tax at 4.45 percent of taxable income. The Utah State Tax Commission lists a 4.85 percent state sales and use tax, with local and county options added on top. Nevada collects no individual income tax. ## Snow, elevation and the delivery day NOAA's normals for the Salt Lake City airport show a January high of 38.6 and a low of 24.2, a July high of 94.0 and a low of 68.2, 15.52 inches of precipitation and 51.9 inches of snow a year. The metro median home value is $515,400.
