If you are one of them, the facts above are the ones that change your paperwork and your budget. California's own agencies set the deadlines on the California side; Nevada's take over once you arrive. ## Leaving California: the deadlines that apply there California's DMV gives new California residents 20 days to register a car and 10 days to get a California license; those rules matter to you only if you are moving into California. Leaving, the important steps are the ones on the Nevada side, plus closing out California accounts and filing a final part-year California tax return. Ask a tax professional about your own situation. ## Taxes: the biggest difference California's top income tax rate is 12.3 percent (Franchise Tax Board, 2025 schedules), and its base state sales tax is 7.25 percent. Nevada has no state personal income tax. Housing in the Reno metro also costs less than in most of California; our [cost-of-living compare](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/tools/cost-of-living-compare/) shows the Census figures metro by metro. ## Arriving in Nevada Nevada's DMV sets its own new-resident deadlines for a license and registration, and most cars registered in Washoe County need an emissions check. The full list is on our [moving to Reno guide](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/moving-to-reno/). ## How the move works Most California moves to Reno cross the Sierra on I-80 or US-50. As the Bekins agent in Sparks, O'Brien's books your move from California and coordinates it from your California home through the Bekins network, then handles delivery, unpacking, and storage in our Sparks warehouse when the new home is not ready. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. ## Popular California routes See the route pages for [Sacramento](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/routes/sacramento-to-reno/), [San Francisco and the Peninsula](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/routes/san-francisco-to-reno/) and [the East Bay](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/long-distance-moving/routes/east-bay-to-reno/), each with the drive, the passes and the numbers on both ends. ## Before the truck leaves California Pack and label boxes by room, and set aside the documents you will need in Nevada: titles and registrations for your cars, proof of your new address, and your current license. Keep valuables, medicines and papers with you instead of on the truck. If you are selling a California home and buying in Nevada, storage between the two closings is common; see [storage between homes](https://obriensmoving-storage.com/full-service-storage/storage-between-moves/). Every interstate mover must give you the FMCSA booklets "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" and "Ready to Move?". Read them before moving day; they explain estimates, valuation and how to file a claim. ### Sources (checked October 18, 2026) - [California DMV, New California Resident portal](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/) - [California Franchise Tax Board, tax rate schedules](https://www.ftb.ca.gov/) - [U.S. Census Bureau, State-to-State Migration Flows 2024](https://www.census.gov/topics/population/migration/guidance/state-to-state-migration-flows.html) ### Licensed movers U.S. DOT No. 30611 MC-109375 Nevada CPCN 1070 Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's) Bekins Van Lines interstate agent since 1955 [Check our USDOT record](https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/query.asp?searchtype=ANY&query_type=queryCarrierSnapshot&query_param=USDOT&query_string=30611) · [Ready to Move? August 28, 2024 Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move. ### Owner's reply Michelle, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We are so happy to hear about the move experience you had with our company and glad to know we met your expectations! It means a lot to us to know that. Thank you for choosing us as your moving partner. S Sonia P. August 4, 2023 Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!! ## Get a long-distance estimate Tell us where you are going.
