Nashville and Memphis households that choose Reno are usually weighing a 7 percent sales tax against Nevada's rates, plus housing costs and distance from family. ## The Tennessee tax picture Tennessee never taxed wages, and its Hall income tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021 or later. The general state sales tax rate is 7 percent, local rates cannot exceed 2.75 percent, and food is taxed at 4 percent. They are rules for arrivals. When you leave, keep your Tennessee license valid until Nevada issues one. ## Tennessee in the Census The 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey lists Tennessee at about 7.07 million people, with a median household income of $69,595, median gross rent of $1,189 and a median home value of $286,700; 33.1 percent of households rent.
