Moving from Reno to Washington, DC
The District of Columbia gives new residents 60 days to hold a DC driver license and to register a vehicle, and Washington is about 2,600 miles from Reno. DC income tax reaches 10.75 percent on income over $1,000,000.
Moving to the capital means a city with its own rules instead of a state's. The DC DMV, the Office of Tax and Revenue and the surrounding Virginia and Maryland counties all matter, because many households in the metro live across a state line from where they work. This page covers the DC end of the move.
DC DMV and the 60-day rule
The DC DMV says that if you live in the District 60 days or more and operate a motor vehicle in public space, DC law requires a DC driver license. Vehicle registration also lists 60 days for new residents.
Convert the license first, since the registration process asks for it, and expect a DC inspection of the vehicle.

How DC taxes compare
The Office of Tax and Revenue publishes DC's graduated income tax schedule, which reaches 10.75 percent on income above $1,000,000. Nevada has no personal income tax. The general sales tax rate is 6 percent in DC.
A household that lives in Maryland or Virginia and works in DC faces a different tax filing than one that lives in the District, so pick your address before you plan your tax year.
A four-season mid-Atlantic climate
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Reagan National Airport show a January high of 44.8 degrees and low of 30.1, a July high of 89.6 and low of 72.4, 41.8 inches of precipitation and about 13.7 inches of snow a year. The city is near 55 feet above sea level.
Summer humidity is the largest change from Reno's dry heat, and an occasional winter storm can slow a delivery.
Housing in the District and the metro
The American Community Survey puts the District's median home value at $737,100, median gross rent at $1,954 and the renter share at 58.5 percent. The wider Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro has a median home value of $579,900 and rent of $2,027.
Many apartment buildings have move-in rules, elevator reservations and loading-zone permits, and those are worth checking with the building manager early.

The O'Brien's side of a DC move
You book with O'Brien's in Sparks. An estimator comes to your home, the estimate is free and comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes, and the numbers are itemized and in writing. Packing and loading happen in Northern Nevada, and the Bekins network carries the move to Washington.
A building elevator slot can set the date, so your written estimate sets the delivery window and the storage fallback is vault storage from $40 per month. See how an interstate move works.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

3 O'Brien movers came down from Reno to South Lake Tahoe to assist our company moving a lot of big furniture out of a large warehouse. They showed up on-time, were friendly, and were professional and got the job done quickly and diligently. Will definitely use them again.
