Carson City and the Carson Valley

This region runs from the state capital south through the Carson Valley to the Douglas County line, with Dayton and Virginia City tied in from the east. The towns share one road spine, which makes a move here easy to plan from our Sparks yard. Each town page has its own drive time, housing figures and services.

Carson City is the nearest town in this region.

The capital city is the closest, at 32.6 miles from 2277 Glendale Ave, and the road is I-580 for about 30 of those miles. The Census counts about 23,700 households in Carson City, and roughly 62 percent of them own their home. Owner households usually have more furniture, a garage and a shed to pack, so the crew size and the number of truck loads are set from the walk-through, not from the zip code.

North Carson City and West Carson City are separate pages because the neighborhoods differ. West Carson City has a Census median home value of about $627,000, well above the city as a whole, while North Carson City has a lower median home value, about $368,000. Both are 30 to 31 miles from our warehouse.

The Carson Valley towns share one road and one planning rhythm.

Minden, Gardnerville and Gardnerville Ranchos run along US 395 south of Carson City, and the builder lists their drive times in the table above: 47, 49 and 52 miles, or 58 to 65 minutes of driving. Genoa is at the foot of the Carson Range, 44.6 miles out, and has the highest Census median home value in the valley, about $1,003,000. Johnson Lane sits higher, at about 5,900 feet, and nearly every household there owns its home.

A drive of an hour or more matters in two ways. The crew's travel time is part of a local move estimate, and a stored shipment coming back from our warehouse needs the delivery day set ahead. Dayton and Virginia City come in from the east.

Dayton is in Lyon County, 43.6 miles and about 66 minutes from our warehouse by way of I-580, US 50 and the FAS 650. It is one of the larger communities on this page, with about 5,800 households, and nearly 80 percent of them are owners. Virginia City is the opposite in size, with about 336 households, and the closest drive on this page at 24 miles, though SR 341 climbs to about 6,100 feet.

Steep, narrow historic streets in Virginia City mean the truck plan matters more than the mileage. Tell the estimator about parking, stairs and the width of the street in front of the house, and the plan will reflect it.

Moving into the Carson Valley from California or another state.

Many Carson Valley moves are interstate. O'Brien's has been a Bekins Van Lines agent since 1955, so a shipment from anywhere is carried over the Bekins network and O'Brien's handles the Nevada end, including delivery and any storage in Sparks while the new house is made ready. Moves between California and Nevada are interstate moves under federal rules.
