How Our Moving Estimates Work

Most moving bills that surprise people come from estimates given without anyone looking at the goods. Ours start with a look.

What the estimate includes

Your estimate is itemized: the services you choose, such as packing, crating or storage, are listed separately, and the estimate shows a not-to-exceed number. Before packing, the crew makes an itemized inventory of your goods and their condition. Long-distance moves are priced by weight.

Binding and non-binding estimates on interstate moves

Federal rules for interstate moves recognize two kinds of written estimate. A binding estimate fixes the price for the goods and services listed. A non-binding estimate is a reasonably accurate projection; on a collect-on-delivery shipment, if you pay 110 percent of the non-binding estimate at delivery, the mover must release your goods and bill any remaining charges later.

Federal rules also require an interstate mover to survey your goods, in person or by video, before giving a written estimate. Your estimator explains which kind of estimate applies to your move.

Why are long-distance moves priced by weight?

Interstate shipments are priced mainly on the weight of the goods and the distance, which is why the estimator needs to see what is moving.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day.
