The median Reno home has 4.9 rooms, so a typical full pack fills cartons for about five rooms before the closets and the garage are counted. O'Brien's crews pack a whole home, a few rooms or only the fragile pieces, and 10 free heavy-duty boxes come with the free in-home estimate.
Reno has more than 114,000 households, and the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates show a mixed housing stock: about half of the homes are single-family houses, and the rest are apartments, condos, townhomes and duplexes. A packing crew in Reno has to be ready for both ends of that range. Our yard in Sparks is about 6 miles and 11 minutes from the middle of Reno, which is why packing day and loading day can sit close together on the calendar. Book on our packing page.

What 4.9 rooms means for a pack
Census counts the kitchen, bedrooms, living room and dining room as rooms, and the Reno median comes out at 4.9. That is the size of home our crews pack most often: a kitchen, a living area and two or three bedrooms. The bedroom counts tell the same story. Reno has about 38,000 three-bedroom homes and about 35,000 two-bedroom homes, more than any other size, followed by roughly 20,000 four-bedroom homes.
Planning a pack starts with those room counts. The kitchen takes the most cartons per room, because plates, glasses and small appliances each need their own wrapping. Bedrooms take fewer cartons but more wardrobe handling, and the garage is a separate job that your estimator measures on its own.
Houses and apartments are packed differently
A little over half of Reno homes are single-family detached houses. A house usually means a garage, a shed or an attic, and the pack has to cover those spaces as well as the rooms. Apartments and condos are the other half of the city, and there the issue is carrying distance: a flight of stairs or a long hallway to the elevator means smaller, lighter cartons that a person can carry safely. See apartment and condo moves for how the crew plans the building.
Older Reno homes
About 37 percent of Reno homes were built before 1980. Older houses tend to have narrower doorways, steeper stairs and built-in shelves, and framed pictures and mirrors on the walls that must come down and go into picture cartons. Our crew pads door frames and stair rails as it works, and packs to the size of the openings it will carry through.

Pick your packing level
Full pack: every room, closet and cupboard, usually the day before loading
Partial pack: the kitchen, the pictures and the rooms you name
Box packing only, with or without a move afterward
Packing into the sturdy boxes you have already collected
Your estimator writes the choice onto the itemized estimate, so the packing you pay for is the packing that is listed.
From a Reno phone call to packed cartons
Call the Sparks office, send the online request, or ask for a phone ballpark first. The in-home estimate is free, an estimator walks through your Reno home, and the 10 free heavy-duty boxes are yours to keep whether or not you book. Packing is scheduled once the date is set, and every carton is labeled with the room it belongs in so the crew at the new home sets it down in the right place.
It depends on the number of rooms, how full the closets are and how much is in the garage. The packing calculator gives a first count by room, and your estimator confirms it at the in-home visit.
Can the crew pack only my kitchen?
Yes. A partial pack covers the rooms or items you choose, and the kitchen and the framed pictures are the most common picks.
Where do I buy tape and extra boxes in Reno?
Boxes, wrap and tape are sold at the Sparks office, 2277 Glendale Ave. Call 775-359-6683 to check the hours before you drive over.
Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
