No federal rule defines peak season. The phrase is a scheduling idea that carriers turn into tariff language, and it matters to you for one reason: the same move can be easier to book, and easier to fit to your calendar, outside the busiest weeks.
A tariff question, not a regulation
Section 375.103 defines a tariff as the document that lists a carrier's rates, rules and classifications, and requires it to be arranged so the exact rate and terms for any shipment can be found. If a carrier treats some dates as peak, the dates and the effect belong there. The mover cannot invent a peak surcharge that is not in the tariff, and the estimate has to show whatever applies to your date.
What changes in a busy stretch
None of this means a peak-date move is a problem. It means the booking conversation has to start earlier.
- Pickup and delivery windows fill sooner, so your preferred days may already be taken
- Crews for packing and loading are scheduled further ahead
- A tariff may carry different terms for those dates
- Storage-in-transit or warehouse space may be tighter to arrange

How to plan around it
Pick your target date, then ask the estimator two things: does the tariff treat that date as peak, and how many days either side would work for the crew?
