Moving from Nevada to Louisiana
Louisiana gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle and 30 days to transfer a driver's license, and it taxes income at a flat 3 percent starting in 2025. About 268 people moved from Nevada to Louisiana in the Census 2024 survey, a small stream toward Baton Rouge, New Orleans and the rest of the state.
A move to Louisiana changes your tax picture more than most Nevada departures do, because Nevada collects no state personal income tax and Louisiana does. The numbers on this page come from Louisiana's own agencies and the Census; the rest explains how to line up the paperwork and the truck so neither one is waiting on the other.

Louisiana's two 30-day clocks
Louisiana law says a new resident must apply for a certificate of registration for each motor vehicle within thirty days, and the state's Office of Motor Vehicles asks for a transferred driver's license within 30 days of establishing a domicile. Both clocks start when you make Louisiana your home, not when the truck pulls away from Sparks.
In practice that means a short list for the first month: proof of your new address, the title or registration for each vehicle, and your Nevada license. Gather the vehicle papers before packing day and keep them in the car with you, not in a carton on the truck.
What Louisiana's flat 3 percent income tax means
For tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2025, Louisiana's individual income tax is a flat 3 percent, and the old graduated brackets were repealed, according to the Louisiana Department of Revenue. Nevada has no state personal income tax, so a Nevada paycheck has had no state withholding and a Louisiana one will.
The state sales tax is 5 percent, and parishes and cities add their own rates on top, so the total at the register depends on where you land. If you are moving for a job, ask the employer how Louisiana withholding will appear on your first pay stub. A tax professional can tell you whether a part-year return applies to the year you move; our note on moving expenses and taxes covers the federal side.
Housing and income in Louisiana, by the Census
The Census American Community Survey puts Louisiana's median household income at 60,756 dollars, its median gross rent at 1,064 dollars a month and its median home value at 216,500 dollars. About a third of Louisiana households rent. Those are statewide medians, so a neighborhood in New Orleans or Baton Rouge can sit well above or below them.
If you are selling a Northern Nevada house and buying in Louisiana, the closings rarely land on the same day. Our storage between homes keeps furniture in the Sparks warehouse, and vault storage starts from $40 per month, until your Louisiana address is ready.

How the move works with O'Brien's
You book the move with O'Brien's in Sparks. An O'Brien's estimator prices a long-distance move by weight in a free, no-obligation in-home estimate, which comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Packing and loading happen here in Northern Nevada, and the Bekins network carries the shipment to Louisiana. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.
Set a date for the change of address, schedule Nevada utilities to end the day after the truck loads, and keep your Nevada license valid until you hold a Louisiana one. The change-of-address checklist covers the mail, bank and insurance accounts people forget. Baton Rouge is the state capital, but wherever in Louisiana you are headed, the same two 30-day clocks apply.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.
