Data (read 2026-10-19): OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, free-flow drive from 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks; U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates; NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020; U.S. Census Bureau, State-to-State Migration Flows (ACS 1-year 2024); U.S. Census Bureau, ACS county-to-county migration flows 2016-2020.

Census estimates put the flow from Sacramento County to Washoe County at about 771 people a year (2016-2020), and California as a whole sent about 8,619 people a year to Washoe. Most of them make the same drive: up I-80 from the valley floor, over the Sierra at Donner, and down into the Truckee Meadows.

The drive: I-80 over Donner Summit

The route leaves the valley at about sea level and climbs more than 7,000 feet in under 90 miles. For a moving truck that matters in two ways. In summer the climb is long and hot, so trucks run early. In winter, Caltrans can require chains or close the highway at Donner during storms, and delivery days are planned around the forecast.

Before any winter move, check Caltrans QuickMap for chain controls on I-80 and the NDOT site for the Nevada side.

What changes when you arrive

The table above compares both ends. Sacramento gets almost no snow in a normal year; Reno averages about 21 inches. July highs are about the same in both places, but Reno nights are much cooler, and the air is dry. Nevada has no state income tax on wages, which is one reason the flow runs strongly from California to Nevada.

How the move works with O'Brien's

On a move from Sacramento, you book with O'Brien's, the Bekins agent in Sparks, and we coordinate the move from your Sacramento home through the Bekins Van Lines network, then handle delivery, unpacking, and storage in our Sparks warehouse if your new home is not ready. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.

When to move

Late spring through early fall avoids the worst Donner weather. Summer is the busiest moving season, so book early. A winter move works too; the estimator builds weather time into the plan.

Getting settled in Reno

Once you arrive, Nevada's DMV new-resident rules apply to your license and car registration, and most vehicles registered in Washoe County need an emissions inspection. Utilities, schools and county services are covered in our moving to Reno guide. If your new home is not ready on delivery day, the shipment can go into storage in our Sparks warehouse and be delivered when you are.

Plenty of people make this move in stages, too: a short stay in a rental while they look for a house, then a second, local move across Reno or Sparks once they buy. Storage in between keeps the household in one place instead of two.

How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

3 O'Brien movers came down from Reno to South Lake Tahoe to assist our company moving a lot of big furniture out of a large warehouse. They showed up on-time, were friendly, and were professional and got the job done quickly and diligently. Will definitely use them again.
