Leaving California: the deadlines that apply there
California's DMV gives new California residents 20 days to register a car and 10 days to get a California license; those rules matter to you only if you are moving into California. Leaving, the important steps are the ones on the Nevada side, plus closing out California accounts and filing a final part-year California tax return. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.
Taxes: the biggest difference
California's top income tax rate is 12.3 percent (Franchise Tax Board, 2025 schedules), and its base state sales tax is 7.25 percent. Nevada has no state personal income tax. Arriving in Nevada
Nevada's DMV sets its own new-resident deadlines for a license and registration, and most cars registered in Washoe County need an emissions check. The full list is on our moving to Reno guide.

Before the truck leaves California
Pack and label boxes by room, and set aside the documents you will need in Nevada: titles and registrations for your cars, proof of your new address, and your current license. Keep valuables, medicines and papers with you instead of on the truck. If you are selling a California home and buying in Nevada, storage between the two closings is common; see storage between homes.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
