California is the closest long-distance neighbor to our Sparks warehouse: Grass Valley is about 90 miles away and El Centro about 611, with the Sierra between you and Reno. Census data counts about 53,300 people moving from California to Nevada in 2024, the largest single flow in the country.
More people move between Reno and California than between Reno and any other state, so this is the busiest corner of our route map. The pages below take each Californian city or region one at a time, in both directions, with the drive from our warehouse at 2277 Glendale Ave in Sparks.
Five mountain crossings decide most California drives
Almost every move between Reno and the Californian side of the Sierra crosses one of five summits. Our route data lists Donner Summit on I-80 at about 7,200 feet, Echo Summit on US-50 at 7,382 feet, Spooner Summit on US-50 at 7,144 feet, Carson Pass on CA-88 at 8,580 feet and Conway Summit on US-395 at about 8,140 feet.
Which one applies depends on where in California you start. Sacramento, Davis, Stockton, Modesto and the Bay Area ride I-80 over Donner. Placerville and El Dorado County use US-50. Calaveras County uses CA-88. Mammoth Lakes, Bishop and the Southern California cities come up US-395 and over Conway Summit. The route page for your city names the crossing and the roads in between.

The far group starts at Fresno, about 300 miles, and reaches Los Angeles at about 469 miles, San Diego at about 549 and El Centro at about 611. Those figures are free-flow road estimates, not delivery promises. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.
How O'Brien's books a California move
Leaving Reno for California, you book with O'Brien's. Our estimator prices the move, we pack, store and load, and the Bekins network carries it to your new address. Coming to Reno from California, you also book with O'Brien's, and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then deliver, unpack and store in Sparks. We have been a Bekins agent since 1955 and a family business since 1941.
Moves that start and end inside California are a separate matter. O'Brien's is permitted in California for those moves, under Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's), and they have their own pages under Northern California moving. Moves between Nevada and California are interstate moves under our federal authority, U.S. DOT No. 30611 and MC-109375.

Plan around winter, not around the calendar
Snow on the summits is the one thing that can change a California drive in winter. Check Caltrans road conditions before your move date and ask your estimator how a weather delay would be handled. Our mountain passes page lists each summit and its elevation.
Which California cities can O'Brien's move to and from?
The route pages here cover 32 cities and regions, from Grass Valley and Auburn to San Diego and El Centro. Other Californian addresses are handled through the same estimate; call 775-359-6683 and we will price yours.
Is a move from California to Reno an interstate move?
Yes. A move across the Nevada and California line is an interstate move under federal rules, even when the two addresses are close together.
Do I need an in-home estimate for a California move?
The in-home estimate is free and comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. For addresses far from Sparks, a phone ballpark or an online request is the first step, and the estimator tells you what else is needed.
