California's short deadlines
The California DMV says that when you become a California resident you must get a California license within 10 days, and that a vehicle previously registered in another state must be registered within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into the state. A move across the line at Truckee or Lake Tahoe puts both clocks on the calendar at once.
Make the DMV appointment before the truck arrives, and carry your Nevada title, your license, proof of insurance and proof of address.
The tax change is the largest of any state here
The California Franchise Tax Board's 2025 schedules top out at 12.3 percent, and the state adds another 1 percent on very high incomes. The base statewide sales and use tax rate is 7.25 percent, with district taxes on top in many cities.
Nevada has no state personal income tax, so a Nevada employer's paycheck changes in California on the first pay date after you become a resident. Ask a tax professional about part-year filing for the year you move.
