Reno to San Francisco is about 248 road miles, roughly 5 hours 19 minutes of free-flow driving, almost all of it on I-80. O'Brien's moves it under its federal authority (U.S. DOT No. 30611) from the Sparks warehouse.
San Francisco is the closest of the big Bay Area cities to Reno and the most expensive place on our route list. Space is the main theme at the destination: smaller homes, steep streets, and buildings with their own rules for moving trucks.

Housing numbers from the Census
The American Community Survey lists a median household income of $140,970 in the city, with 61.8 percent of households renting. Across the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro the medians are $2,474 for rent and $1,140,700 for home value.
Apartments and older flats are common, so a move often means fewer square feet than a Reno or Sparks house. Deciding early which furniture ships and which goes to storage keeps the truck load matched to the new space.
Cool summers and mild winters
NOAA's normals for the San Francisco downtown station show a January high of 57.8 degrees and a low of 46.6, and a July high of just 66.3 with a low of 54.4. Rain totals about 22.9 inches a year and snow does not register.
After a Reno summer, with July highs well into the 90s, the San Francisco summer reads as cool. Layers matter more than air conditioning.
California's deadlines and tax rates
California DMV sets a 10-day window for a California driver license and a 20-day window for registering a vehicle brought in from another state. The base statewide sales and use tax is 7.25 percent, and district taxes can be added.
The Franchise Tax Board's 2025 rate schedule lists a top income tax rate of 12.3 percent, plus an additional 1 percent on taxable income over $1 million. Nevada collects no individual income tax.

The drive over Donner Summit
The route follows I-80 over Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet, then drops into the Sacramento Valley and the bay. Caltrans posts winter chain controls on QuickMap. A shorter distance does not make delivery a fixed day: your written estimate sets the window.
How the move works with O'Brien's
You book with O'Brien's, and we coordinate the move from your Reno or Sparks home through the Bekins Van Lines network. Estimating, packing and loading start in Sparks, and the free in-home estimate includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes. If the San Francisco building has a narrow window for elevator or truck access, the shipment can wait in storage in Sparks. Start with how an interstate move works.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
