North Dakota has a top income tax rate of 2.5 percent and the smallest population of any state in this series. The paperwork has a twist: registration is due when residency begins or when you take a job, not after a grace period. The details come from the Highway Patrol, the Department of Transportation and the tax department.

Registration on residency or employment

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says vehicles must be registered when residency is established or when employment is accepted, whichever occurs first. The state publishes no grace period in days for registration, so none is given here. For a license, the Highway Patrol says a non-commercial license from another state can be used for 60 days after you become a resident.

Bring your Nevada title, proof of insurance and proof of your North Dakota address. Commercial license holders follow a different window, so check the Highway Patrol page.

A low top rate

For tax year 2025, the North Dakota Tax Department lists a single-filer rate of zero up to 48,475 dollars, 1.95 percent up to 244,825 dollars and 2.5 percent above it. The state sales tax is 5 percent for most retail sales, and cities add their own.

Nevada has no state personal income tax, so North Dakota withholding is new, though small for most households. A tax professional can explain a part-year return.

Housing and income

The Census American Community Survey lists North Dakota's median household income at 76,657 dollars, its median gross rent at 954 dollars a month and its median home value at 249,900 dollars. About 37 percent of households rent, and the median age is 35.9, the youngest in this series. Bismarck is the capital; the Census county series counts about 14 Washoe County residents a year moving to North Dakota, with a very wide margin.

From Sparks to the Northern Plains

You book with O'Brien's in Sparks. A free in-home estimate prices the move by weight and includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Packing and loading take place in Northern Nevada, and the Bekins network carries the goods to North Dakota. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.

North Dakota winters are long and snowy, so a winter delivery calls for a cleared drive and parking space. Read moving-day tips from a family mover and plan the first-night box as the one thing that rides with you.

If the house is not ready

Seasonal timing can leave a gap. Long-term household storage in Sparks holds your goods until the North Dakota address is ready, and the long-distance checklist helps with the rest.
