South Dakota gives new residents 90 days to title and license a vehicle, has no personal income tax, and charges a 4.2 percent state sales tax. O'Brien's books your move from Sparks and the Bekins network carries it to South Dakota.
South Dakota keeps Nevada's no-income-tax advantage and adds the longest vehicle window on this page. The figures come from the state's Department of Revenue and Department of Public Safety.

Ninety days from arrival
The South Dakota Department of Revenue says you have 90 days from your date of arrival to title and license your vehicle. The Department of Public Safety frames the driver license rule as a residency test: if you live in South Dakota for more than 90 days, you need a South Dakota license. Commercial license holders are held to a shorter 30 days.
A longer window is not a reason to wait. Insurance, school enrollment and voting all key off your new address, so most movers visit the county treasurer and license office in the first weeks.
No income tax, a lower sales tax
South Dakota has no corporate, unitary or personal income tax according to the Department of Revenue's 2026 sales and use tax guide. Nevada has none on personal income either, so the wage line in your budget stays familiar.
The state sales and use tax is 4.2 percent, cut from 4.5 percent in July 2023, and municipalities may add 1 to 2 percent. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent, so everyday purchases may cost less.
From Sparks to the plains
You book with O'Brien's. An estimator visits, writes an itemized written estimate and records condition on an inventory before packing; the Bekins network carries the shipment to South Dakota. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. Ask your estimator to explain how the estimate handles the months you plan to move.
Tools, outdoor gear and other awkward items are packed with the same care as furniture; see packing.

Storage on the Sparks end
If you sell in Nevada before South Dakota is ready, a wooden vault in our Sparks warehouse costs from $40 per month, and about 2 to 3 weeks notice ships it. The estimator brings 10 free heavy-duty boxes with the free estimate.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
