The price gap between Reno and Cleveland is wide enough to shape the whole move, from how much space a household looks for to how much furniture is worth shipping. This page sticks to the Lake Erie end of the trip: housing, lake-shore weather, what Ohio asks of new residents and how O'Brien's plans the shipment from Sparks.

Housing on the Cleveland side

The American Community Survey puts median gross rent in the city of Cleveland at $945 and median household income at $40,801. For the Cleveland metro the medians are $1,050 for rent, $70,678 for household income and $215,400 for a home. In the Reno metro the same survey gives median rent of $1,592 and median household income of $87,485.

The city has 58.3 percent renter households, a high share, and the metro as a whole is 33.5 percent. Neighborhood choice inside Cuyahoga County moves these numbers a long way, so treat them as a starting frame and not a quote on any address.

Lake Erie weather

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Burke Lakefront Airport station list a January high of 35.3 degrees and a low of 23.5, and a July high of 80.7 with a low of 67.9. Reno's January high is 47.7 and its July high is 93.9, so Cleveland is colder in January and about thirteen degrees cooler in July. Annual precipitation is 33.34 inches, far more than Reno sees.

Wet ground in March and April is the detail to plan around. Tell your estimator about steps, porches and the length of the driveway at the new address, since a muddy approach changes how a crew carries furniture in.

Ohio's 30-day deadlines and flat tax

Ohio's Bureau of Motor Vehicles tells new residents to transfer their license, title and registration within 30 days of establishing residency, and Ohio Revised Code 4503.111 sets the same 30 days for registering a vehicle. Book the license visit early, because it is the document you will need for everything else.

For tax year 2026 Ohio uses a single rate of 2.75 percent on nonbusiness income above $26,050. The state sales and use tax rate is 5.75 percent, and counties and transit authorities can add more. Nevada has no individual income tax, so the year of the move is worth a conversation with an accountant.

How the move works with O'Brien's

The booking is with O'Brien's. An estimator looks at your Reno or Sparks home, writes an itemized written estimate and leaves 10 free heavy-duty boxes. The shipment travels through the Bekins Van Lines network, and your written estimate sets the delivery window. Read how an interstate move works with a Bekins agent for the order of events.

Closing dates in Ohio do not always line up with a Nevada sale. If the Cleveland home is not ready, your goods can rest in vault storage in Sparks, which starts from $40 per month, until you call for delivery.

How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
