Detroit pairs a very large metro of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties with a city whose Census home values are low. The Great Lakes winter, the state's single sales tax rate and a few city income taxes are the Michigan details to know before you load.
The Michigan Secretary of State's page for new residents says that once residency is established, you should visit a Secretary of State office immediately to apply for a Michigan driver's license or state ID. It does not publish a number of days for the vehicle either.
Take that wording at face value: book an appointment for the first days after arrival, with your title, proof of insurance and two proofs of residency in hand.
The Michigan Department of Treasury announced a 4.25 percent income tax rate for individuals for tax year 2026. The sales tax rate is 6 percent, and Michigan has no local sales tax, so the rate on a Detroit receipt matches the rate in the suburbs.
Some Michigan cities levy their own income tax, so a household choosing between Detroit and a suburb should compare city taxes as well as rent.
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Detroit City Airport show a January high of 32.4 degrees and low of 19.8, a July high of 83.5 and low of 64.9, and 29.9 inches of precipitation a year. The city is at about 639 feet above sea level.
Winter weather is the main scheduling issue, since Reno's dry cold is a different thing from a Great Lakes snowfall.
The American Community Survey puts the city of Detroit at a median home value of $83,900, a median gross rent of $1,074 and a renter share of 49.7 percent. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro has a median home value of $249,700 and median gross rent of $1,207.
