Moving from Reno to St. Louis
Missouri's Department of Revenue says to apply for a Missouri driver license as soon as you establish residency, and a 30-day title and registration rule applies to vehicles. St. Louis is about 1,840 miles from Reno.
St. Louis straddles the Mississippi, and the metro includes counties in Illinois as well as Missouri. That means a household choosing a side of the river also chooses a state. This page covers the Missouri rules and numbers.
Missouri license first
The Missouri Department of Revenue says that as soon as you establish residency, you must apply and pay for a Missouri driver license. A rule of the department says to title and register all vehicles within 30 days.
If you land on the Illinois side of the metro, Illinois rules apply instead. Check the state of your new address.

Missouri taxes
The Department of Revenue lists a 2026 top income tax rate of 4.7 percent, with further reductions only if revenue triggers are met. The state sales tax rate is 4.225 percent, and local taxes add to it.
The St. Louis city earnings tax is a separate local item for residents and workers, so ask your employer's payroll team.
A humid continental climate
NOAA's normals for the Cahokia St. Louis downtown station show a January high of 40.2 degrees and low of 24.1, a July high of 89.0 and low of 68.8, and 40.8 inches of precipitation a year. Summers are humid and winters see freezing nights.
The St. Louis area sits near 467 feet above sea level, far below Reno.
St. Louis housing
The American Community Survey puts the city of St. Louis at a median home value of $197,500, median gross rent of $997 and a renter share of 54.7 percent. The St. Louis metro has a median home value of $244,800 and rent of $1,113.
Census flows for 2016-2020 show about 59 people a year moving from the St. Louis counties to Washoe County, and about 53 moving the other way, within a wide margin of error.

Choosing a side of the river
St. Louis households choose between Missouri and Illinois when they pick an address, and that choice sets the DMV rules, income tax and school district. Decide the state before you book a license appointment.
After that, the first week covers the Missouri license, the vehicle title, utilities and the earnings tax if you live or work in the city.
How O'Brien's takes you to St. Louis
You book with O'Brien's in Sparks. The free in-home estimate comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Our crews pack and load in Northern Nevada, and the Bekins network carries the shipment to Missouri.
Your written estimate sets the delivery window. If your home is under contract but not closed, vault storage from $40 per month holds the household in Sparks. Use the load planner to think through volume.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.
