Moving from Reno to Louisville
Kentucky law gives you 15 days to apply for registration after bringing a vehicle into the state, and a Kentucky credential is due within 30 days of establishing residency. The drive from our Sparks warehouse is about 2,112 road miles.
Louisville sits on the Kentucky side of the Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN metro, so the first question for a household from Reno is which side of the Ohio River the address is on. This page covers the Kentucky side: the state's short registration clock, its flat income tax, local housing numbers, weather and how O'Brien's plans the shipment.
Kentucky's 15 and 30 day deadlines
Kentucky Revised Statutes 186.020 says a person who brings a motor vehicle into the Commonwealth from another state must apply for registration within 15 days. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet adds that new residents must obtain a Kentucky credential within 30 days of establishing residency. The Cabinet's page also mentions a 10 day figure in one section, so follow the statute and confirm with your county clerk.
Kentucky's individual income tax rate is a flat 3.5 percent for 2026, down from 4 percent in 2025. The statewide sales tax is 6 percent, and Kentucky has no local option sales tax. Nevada has no individual income tax, so the move year is worth a professional's review.

Louisville housing
The American Community Survey lists a median home value of $248,700 for the Louisville/Jefferson County metro and $233,900 for the Louisville metro government area. Median gross rent is $1,116 in the metro and $1,120 in the city, and median household income is $73,863 in the metro. Reno's metro medians are $502,300 for a home, $1,592 for rent and $87,485 for income.
About 39.3 percent of households in the city rent, and 31.1 percent across the metro. Medians describe areas and not a given address.
A wet, humid river valley
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Bowman Field list a January high of 42.9 degrees with a low of 27.1, and a July high of 87.9 with a low of 69.3. Annual precipitation is 48.12 inches. Reno's January high is 47.7 and its July high is 93.9.
Plenty of rain means plenty of wet entryways. Ask your estimator about floor protection and the walk from truck to door, and plan a spot indoors for cardboard and wrapping paper.

How the move works with O'Brien's
The booking is with O'Brien's. An estimator walks through your Reno or Sparks home for a free, no-obligation in-home estimate, and 10 free heavy-duty boxes are yours to keep. The move travels through the Bekins Van Lines network, and your written estimate sets the delivery window. For the steps in order, read how an interstate move works with a Bekins agent.
If the Louisville address is across the river in Indiana, the move is booked the same way, and the Indiana BMV sets its own rules for new residents. Storage in Sparks, from $40 per month in a wooden vault, covers any gap between homes.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

Francie, Thank you for this amazing review. The result you have expressed is exactly what we all strive to accomplish. I love that you walked away knowing you are now a part of the O'Brien's family, whenever you need us we are a phone call away! I will let the movers know about the kind words expressed about them, that will be very satisfying for all of them. We will look forward to any referrals you send our way, thank you for the opportunity!
