Each row's source is the state's own agency: USA.gov state motor vehicle services.

Reading the Nevada row

Nevada requires a new resident to register a vehicle within 30 days and to get a driver license within 30 days, according to the Nevada DMV. The state has no personal income tax on wages and a base sales tax rate of 6.85 percent; counties add to that, so the rate at a register in Reno is higher. For steps, see getting a Nevada driver license, registering your car in Nevada and Nevada taxes for new residents.

If you are leaving a state, its row also helps you plan the last steps there, such as closing out registration and filing a final state tax return.

States with no income tax

Nine rows in the table show no tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Moving from one of these to Nevada leaves your wage tax at zero, while moving from California (12.3 percent top rate), Oregon (9.9 percent), Hawaii (11 percent) or New York (10.9 percent) removes a state income tax bill. The top rate applies only to the highest bracket, so it is a ceiling and not what most households pay.

Sales tax runs the other way. Oregon, Montana and Delaware have a base rate of 0 percent, and Tennessee and Mississippi have 7 percent. California's base rate is 7.25 percent, Texas 6.25 percent and Washington 6.5 percent.

The deadlines that surprise people

Deadlines vary a lot. California allows 20 days for registration and 10 days for a license. Florida allows 10 days for registration. Alaska allows 10 days for registration and 90 days for a license, Illinois and Texas 90 days for a license, and Wyoming 365 days. Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas and South Dakota give 90 days for registration.

Where the table says 'see state DMV' the state's page does not state one number, for example because the deadline depends on the vehicle or on residency status. Check the agency before you rely on it.

How current the data is

The table was read in October 2026 from each agency's page. Tax rates are for the 2025 tax year where noted by the agency, and sales tax rates are state base rates only; cities and counties add their own. Rules change by legislation, often on January 1 or July 1, so treat every row as a pointer to the official page.

For links to each state's agency, USA.gov keeps a directory of state motor vehicle services, and the Nevada Department of Taxation and Nevada DMV publish the local rules.

What the table is not

It is not tax or legal advice, and it does not describe fees. It also does not cover special rules for service members, which each state's agency publishes separately. See military moving for how the booking works.

For moves from California, Texas and Arizona, the state pages, such as moving to Reno from California, pair these deadlines with the migration flows.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call 775-359-6683, Mon-Fri 8-5, or see the moving FAQ.

How long do I have to register my car in Nevada?

The table shows 30 days after becoming a Nevada resident, from the Nevada DMV. Check the DMV site for what to bring.

Which states have no income tax?

Nine rows show none: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Why do some rows say 'see state DMV'?

The state's page gave no single deadline in days. Rules can depend on the vehicle, the license class or residency, so the official page decides.

Is the top income tax rate what I will pay?

No. It is the rate on the highest bracket only. Lower brackets are taxed at lower rates, so your own rate depends on income and filing status.

What customers say about O'Brien's

Michelle C.

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Sonia P.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!

Jennifer C.

Customer service, packers, and loaders were very responsive, professional, and did an overall great job.
