About 2,600 people living in Nevada in 2024 had lived in Georgia a year earlier, according to Census estimates, and Georgia's flat income tax of 4.99 percent is one of the things they left behind. Nevada has no state personal income tax, and its license and registration clock is 30 days, the same as Georgia's.
Georgia sends a steady stream of households west, many of them from the Atlanta area. The first thing to know is that the two states share a 30-day rule for new residents, so the paperwork feels familiar even when the weather does not.

Georgia's side of the paperwork
The Georgia Department of Revenue says new residents must register vehicles within 30 days of the move, and the Department of Driver Services says to apply for a Georgia license within 30 days of becoming a resident. Leaving, you close out those same items in reverse. Keep your Georgia title until you have Nevada plates, and ask the county tag office how to cancel your Georgia registration.

A flat 4.99 percent versus none
Georgia reduced its individual income tax to a flat 4.99 percent, and its state sales tax is 4 percent with local additions. Nevada does not collect state income tax on wages. Plan for a part-year Georgia return in the year you move, and ask a tax professional about the date you stop being a Georgia resident.
