Moving to Reno from Indiana

Indiana already has one of the lower income tax rates in the Midwest, so for an Indiana household the Nevada question is less about tax and more about housing, climate and what sits at the far end of the drive. These notes cover both ends.

Indiana's 60-day rules

The Indiana BMV tells people who move into the state they have 60 days to apply for a title and 60 days to obtain an Indiana license. Leaving, your steps are different: collect your title, cancel your Indiana registration after Nevada plates are issued, and update your voter registration. Counties handle property tax on homes, and the vehicle excise tax is billed with registration, so ask the BMV how your plates are closed out.

If a lender holds your car title, tell them early so the paperwork reaches the Nevada DMV in time for the 30-day window.

Indiana's 2.95 percent and the 2.90 percent coming

The Indiana Department of Revenue lists a 2.95 percent individual adjusted gross income tax rate for 2026, scheduled to move to 2.90 percent in 2027. The state sales tax is 7 percent. Nevada does not tax wages at the state level. Because Indiana's rate is low, the saving from Nevada is real but modest compared with a move from a high-tax state, and the housing numbers in the Census tables in our cost-of-living compare tool matter more.

Indiana counties can add local income taxes, which the state rate does not show. Look at your last county tax return line by line.
