Minnesota's top income tax rate for 2026 is 9.85 percent, and new residents have 60 days to register a vehicle and 60 days to use an out-of-state license. Nevada has no state personal income tax and asks for registration and a license within 30 days.
Minnesota is a state with a high top tax rate and a famously cold winter, so Reno's climate and tax picture draws many households. About 1,100 people living in Nevada in 2024 had lived in Minnesota a year earlier, per Census estimates.

Minnesota's 60 days
Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services says people who recently moved to Minnesota have 60 days to register a passenger vehicle, and state law lets a person with a valid out-of-state license drive for 60 days. Those rules apply to arrivals. Leaving, cancel Minnesota registration after Nevada's is issued and keep your title.
Four brackets up to 9.85 percent
Minnesota's 2026 income tax rates are 5.35, 6.80, 7.85 and 9.85 percent, with the top rate starting at $203,151 for single filers. The state sales tax is 6.875 percent with local additions. Nevada collects no state income tax on wages. For higher earners this is the most notable financial difference in the move. Ask a tax professional about a part-year return.
