Mississippi is phasing its income tax down, which narrows the gap with Nevada each year. For many households the real difference is climate and housing, and the long trip that connects them.
The Mississippi Department of Revenue says you have 30 days to register a vehicle after moving there if you hold a current registration from your previous state, and the Driver Service Bureau says to get a Mississippi license within 60 days. These apply to arrivals. Leaving, cancel Mississippi registration after Nevada's, and ask your county tax collector about ad valorem tax on the car.
Nevada uses one 30-day clock for both, so a single trip to the DMV covers it.
Mississippi's income tax is a single rate on income above $10,000: 4.4 percent in 2025, 4 percent in 2026 and scheduled to be 3.75 percent in 2027. The state sales tax is 7 percent.
