The Bay Area is the longest of the descent moves from the Truckee and Tahoe area, and the one where city living changes the most. The truck crosses Donner Summit, runs the length of the Sacramento Valley and arrives in a place with narrow streets, hills, stairs and parking rules that matter as much as the miles.

The drive: I-80 and CA 37

The route follows I-80 for 153 miles, then uses CA 37 for 18 miles across the north end of San Francisco Bay before the last city streets. Donner Summit is the only mountain pass on the route and it comes early. After that the drive is flat valley highway followed by metro traffic, which is the slow part.

Weekday commute hours around Sacramento, Vallejo and the Bay Bridge approaches add real time to a free-flow estimate of about 4 h 48 min. Crews plan the arrival so the truck reaches the city outside peak traffic and ahead of any loading-zone restrictions.

Mountain town to city: what the numbers say

The both-ends table prints Census figures for each place. Truckee town has a median household income of $130,462 and a median home value of $947,900. San Francisco city shows a median household income of $140,970, a median gross rent of $2,476 and a median home value of $1,394,500, with 61.8 percent of households renting.

That renter share is the part that changes your move. Many Bay Area destinations are apartments and condos, often with an elevator, a loading dock or a street-parking permit to arrange. A Truckee house with a garage full of tools, skis and bikes may need to be sorted before the move so only what fits the new home is loaded.

How the move works with O'Brien's

Moves between two California addresses run under O'Brien's California authority, shown in the 'Permitted in California' band as Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's). You deal with O'Brien's from the first call to the last box. An estimator visits your home in Truckee, itemizes the household and gives you a written estimate.

The California Bureau of Household Goods and Services is the state's source for consumer rules on household goods moves. Read its guidance on estimates and contracts before you choose a mover.

Getting ready on both ends

Before the crew arrives, ask your new building for its move-in rules: reserved elevator times, certificate-of-insurance requests and the distance a truck can park from the door. In the Bay Area these details decide whether a move takes one day or two.

If the new place is not ready, your belongings can stay in vault storage from $40 per month at our Sparks warehouse. Our long-distance moving checklist and box calculator guide help with the weeks before the move, and your free in-home estimate includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes.

Moves within California

Permitted in California

O'Brien's Moving & Storage moves households within California under its own authority: Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's). A move between Nevada and California crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move under our federal authority (U.S. DOT No. 30611, MC-109375) instead.
