Two numbers appear on a mover's credentials, and they answer different questions. The USDOT number says who the company is. The MC number says what kind of for-hire work it has permission to do across state lines.
What operating authority means
Section 390.201 explains that a carrier files one online application to identify itself with FMCSA and to obtain the operating authority required under the federal motor carrier statutes, as applicable. Authority is the legal permission to carry property for hire between states. Part 365 sets the rules for the applications, including certificates of registration for motor carriers of property and licenses for brokers.

Why it matters for a move
A household goods mover charging to cross a state line needs the permission, and the number is how you verify it. When a company lists a USDOT number but no authority, or authority that does not cover household goods, the next question is why. For a move from Northern Nevada to another state, MC-109375 is the number to look for on O'Brien's paperwork.
For a move inside Nevada the relevant credential is a Nevada Transportation Authority certificate, which for O'Brien's is CPCN 1070. See CPCN.
How to look one up
Use the FMCSA company snapshot. Search by name or USDOT number, then read the authority section: it lists the authority type and whether it is active. Confirm that the legal name matches the estimate and that the cargo type includes household goods. Our guide on checking a mover's USDOT and MC number shows the same steps.
A short verification list
- Legal name matches the estimate
- Authority status is active
- Household goods is among the authorized cargo
- The number printed in the ad matches the record
Brokers hold their own authority, which is why the moving broker entry shows how to tell the difference.
How the MC number shows up in daily use
You will see the MC number on a mover's truck door lettering, its website footer and the registration records that FMCSA publishes. On O'Brien's paperwork it sits beside the U.S. DOT number so the two can be read together. If you hold an estimate from any company, copy both numbers and compare them with the public record. A match on both is the quickest sign that the company in front of you is the company on file.
MC number and the broker license
Part 365 also covers licenses to operate as a broker of motor vehicle transportation, so a docket number can belong to a broker as well as a carrier. That is the reason to read the authority type, not just the number.
