Alaska works differently from Nevada in three ways that matter before the truck is loaded: the vehicle clock starts almost at once, there is no state income tax, and sales tax is set town by town instead of by the state. Here is what to line up on both sides of the move.

Alaska's first deadline is for your vehicle

The Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles says that if you intend to establish residency, you must apply for registration within 10 days of entering the state or taking a job within the state. That is a short window, so gather your title or registration papers and proof of insurance before you leave Nevada, and keep them in the car or in your carry-on bag instead of on the moving truck.

Nevada's own rule works the other way around when people arrive here: its statute gives new Nevada residents 30 days. If you have a vehicle that is still being financed, ask your lender early about the paperwork Alaska will want to see.

Transferring your driver license

Alaska's DMV states that a new resident must transfer an out-of-state driver license within 90 days, or within 30 days for a commercial driver. Nobody needs to rush the license on the first week, but do not let the 90 days slip while you are unpacking. Check the Alaska DMV page linked below for the documents and the nearest office, because some Alaska communities are far from a DMV counter.

Before you go, close out anything Nevada-specific that you will no longer need: update the address on your insurance, bank and employer records, and ask your Nevada DMV office whether your registration or plates need any final step.

Taxes: no state income tax, local sales tax

Alaska's Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development states that there is no personal state income tax. Nevada has none either, so most Nevada households will see no change on that line. Sales tax is the difference: the state levies none, but about 110 of Alaska's 162 municipal governments levy their own, from 1 percent to 7 percent according to the state's Local Government Resource Desk. What you pay at the register depends on the town you choose.

Alaska also has a Permanent Fund and other programs with their own residency rules. Ask the state agency that runs the program, or a tax professional, about your own situation.

What the numbers say about living there

The Census Bureau puts Alaska's population at about 735,706, with a median household income of $92,788 and a median gross rent of $1,419. The median home value is $352,900, and about a third of households rent. Those are statewide figures; Anchorage, Fairbanks and smaller towns differ a good deal, so read local listings before you commit to a lease.

Census migration estimates show a modest two-way flow between Nevada and Alaska. In the 2024 survey, about 655 people living in Alaska had lived in Nevada a year earlier, with a wide margin of error. It is a small stream, which is one reason to start planning early.

How the move works through the Bekins network

O'Brien's has been a Bekins Van Lines agent since 1955. You book the move with us in Sparks, and your written estimate from an O'Brien's estimator is itemized and in writing. We handle the estimate, the packing, the storage and the loading, and the Bekins network carries the shipment to Alaska. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.

A move to Alaska is long-distance and interstate, priced by weight, so what you bring matters. The free in-home estimate is the best moment to decide what goes, what stays and what waits in vault storage in our Sparks warehouse. The estimate comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep.

Your car and your household goods

Many families move one vehicle with the household and keep another with them. Ask the estimator about auto transport with your move and about how the vehicle fits the 10-day registration clock above. Our packing service can pack the whole house, a few rooms, or just fill your own boxes, and the Sparks office carries packing supplies.

Every interstate mover must give you the FMCSA booklets "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" and "Ready to Move?". Read them before moving day; they explain estimates, valuation and how to file a claim.
