Moving from Nevada to Maryland
Maryland gives new residents 60 days to get a Maryland license and to title and register their vehicles, and its state sales tax is 6 percent. About 898 people moved from Nevada to Maryland in the Census 2024 survey, and roughly 216 Washoe County residents a year have left for Maryland counties in the 2016 to 2020 data.
Maryland is one of the East Coast states where Reno and Sparks households land, often for federal work, the Baltimore and Washington corridors or family. It is also a state where local rules add to the state ones: counties set their own income tax on top of the state's. This page covers the deadlines first, then the taxes, then how the shipment gets there.

One 60-day deadline for license, title and registration
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration states that you must obtain your Maryland driver's license and your Maryland vehicle title and registration within 60 days of becoming a Maryland resident. One sentence covers all three, which makes Maryland simpler to plan around than states with separate clocks.
The MVA has announced daily fines for late registration beginning October 1, 2026, so do not let the 60 days run to the last week. Collect your Nevada title, proof of insurance valid in Maryland and proof of your new address before you leave Sparks.
State and county taxes
Maryland's state sales and use tax is 6 percent. Its top state income tax bracket is 6.5 percent on taxable income over one million dollars for single filers, and counties add a local income tax on top of the state rate, up to 3.30 percent. A 2 percent surtax on capital gains also applies above 350,000 dollars of federal adjusted gross income.
Nevada charges no state personal income tax, so the combination of state and county income tax is the biggest shift in your paycheck. Which county you settle in matters, and the Maryland Comptroller publishes the rate chart. Ask a tax professional about a part-year return for the year you move.
What the Census says about housing
In the Census American Community Survey, Maryland's median household income is 103,678 dollars, its median gross rent is 1,705 dollars a month and its median home value is 419,900 dollars. About a third of Maryland households rent. These are state medians, and the numbers in Baltimore City, the suburbs and the Eastern Shore are not alike.
Annapolis is the capital. For comparison, our Reno cost of living page sets Washoe County figures beside these, which helps if you are weighing a move back and forth.

How a Nevada to Maryland shipment works
You book with O'Brien's in Sparks and an estimator prices the move by weight in a free in-home estimate that includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes. The crew packs and loads in Northern Nevada and the Bekins network carries the shipment across the country; your written estimate sets the delivery window.
Maryland leases often start on the first of the month, and closings move around. If your new address is not ready, storage in transit keeps the goods safely stored until delivery. Use the long-distance checklist to work backward from your arrival date.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
