Moving from Nevada to Montana

The license window, and a registration rule without a number

Montana Code Annotated 61-5-103 says new residents must apply to convert a valid out-of-state license within 60 consecutive days, and 30 consecutive days for a commercial license. For vehicles, Montana law says a resident who owns a vehicle driven on public highways shall register it in the county where the registering owner is domiciled. The statute gives no number of days for move-ins, so this page prints none; ask your county treasurer's office for the current practice.

No sales tax, a modest income tax

The Montana Department of Revenue states that Montana does not have a general sales tax. Some resort communities add a local resort tax, up to 3 percent, so a purchase in a ski town may still carry one. For income, the state's rate for tax year 2026 is 5.65 percent on taxable income above 47,500 dollars for single filers, with a lower rate of 4.7 percent below it, and the state plans 5.4 percent for 2027.
