Montana and Nevada are neighbors in the Mountain West, but a move between them still crosses Idaho or Utah and a lot of high country. The tax shape changes, too: Montana has an income tax and no sales tax, and Nevada is the reverse.
Montana law treats a person who has lived in the state more than 60 consecutive days as a resident for licensing, and new residents must convert their license within 60 consecutive days. For vehicles, Montana Code 61-3-303 requires registration in the owner's county but states no day count for newcomers. Those apply to arrivals. Leaving, ask your county treasurer how to cancel registration after Nevada's is issued.
Montana also has local resort taxes in some towns, so ask your own town about what applies.
For 2026 Montana's top income tax rate is 5.65 percent on taxable income above $47,500 for single filers, and the state has no general sales tax. Nevada has no state personal income tax on wages and does charge a sales tax.
