Virginia gives new residents 30 days to title and register a vehicle and 60 days to get a Virginia driver's license, with a top income tax rate of 5.75 percent and a combined statewide sales tax of 5.3 percent. O'Brien's books your move from Sparks and the Bekins network carries it to Virginia.
Virginia's DMV puts titling first and registering second, and its sales tax has a state part and a local part that add up statewide. The sections below follow the DMV and the Department of Taxation.

Title first, then register
The Virginia DMV says you must first title your vehicle within 30 days of moving to Virginia and register it at any Virginia DMV customer service center within the same 30 days. The license window is longer: when you move to Virginia you have 60 days to get a Virginia driver's license. Commercial license holders are held to 30 days.
Bring the Nevada title, registration, proof of insurance and proof of address. A lienholder holding your title can add a step, so ask your lender how to release it.
Taxes in the Commonwealth
Nevada collects no state personal income tax. Virginia's 2025 rate schedule, unchanged for years, reaches $720 plus 5.75 percent of the amount over $17,000, so the top rate is 5.75 percent and applies to almost every wage earner above that modest threshold.
The retail sales and use tax is a combined 5.3 percent statewide: a 4.3 percent state part and a 1 percent local part that applies everywhere. Regional add-ons bring some areas to 6 or 7 percent. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent.
The move from Northern Nevada
You book with O'Brien's, and the move starts at your home with an in-home estimate. An estimator itemizes the load, gives a written estimate and records condition on an inventory before packing. The Bekins network carries the shipment to Virginia, and the written estimate sets the delivery window. Military households heading to Virginia installations can read about military moves and storage.

Holding the household in Sparks
If the Virginia house is not closed, wooden vaults in our Sparks warehouse hold the household from $40 per month, with about 2 to 3 weeks notice to ship. The estimator leaves 10 free heavy-duty boxes. See how an interstate move works for the paperwork you will receive.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.
