Moving from Reno to Honolulu
Hawaii gives you thirty days after you start driving a vehicle there to apply for registration, and Honolulu's metro area holds about 998,747 people. You book the move with O'Brien's, and we coordinate it from Reno through the Bekins network.
Honolulu is a move across the Pacific, so the questions people ask are different from a road move. What does the island cost to live in, which taxes change, how soon must a car be registered, and what does the weather do to a household shipment? This page answers those from the Hawaii side. Census data shows how small this flow is: about 1,355 people a year moved from Nevada to Hawaii in the 2024 one-year survey, with a wide margin of error of 782, so it is a move most neighbors have not made and few can advise on.
What Hawaii requires after you arrive
Hawaii Revised Statutes section 286-54 gives you thirty days after you begin operating a vehicle in the state to apply for registration. Plan for that clock to start when the car comes off the ship, not on the day you land, and keep your out-of-state title and insurance papers with you rather than in a shipping box.
Driver licenses work differently. Under HRS 286-105, a person who is at least eighteen and holds a valid license from another state is exempt from the Hawaii license requirement, so a Nevada license is not instantly invalid. The county where you live handles the transfer, and the county office is the place to confirm what it wants to see and when. The statute names no day count, so the page does not invent one.

Taxes that change when you leave Nevada
Nevada collects no individual income tax on wages. Hawaii does. Its top rate is 11 percent, and the Department of Taxation's schedule for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024 applies that rate only to income above $650,000 for a single filer, with lower brackets below it. Census data for fiscal 2024 shows Hawaii collected about $3.3 billion in individual income tax that year, while Nevada collected none.
Hawaii has no sales tax. It has the General Excise Tax instead, a tax on business activity at 4 percent for most businesses, and counties can add a surcharge of up to 0.5 percent, which businesses commonly pass along on receipts. The practical effect for a new resident is that the tax shows up on nearly everything you buy, from groceries to services. Build that into your first-year budget before you fill your inventory.
Honolulu's climate and what it means for your belongings
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Honolulu International Airport show a January high of 80.5 degrees and low of 66.8, and a July high of 88.1 with a low of 75.1. Annual rainfall is about 16.4 inches and there is no snow. Reno swings through freezing winters and hot, dry summers, so the change is large in both directions.
What matters for a household is humidity and salt air. Wood furniture, leather, books, photographs and electronics all age differently near the ocean. Ask your estimator how to wrap and cushion these items, and consider vault storage in Sparks for anything you will not use right away. Vault storage starts from $40 per month, and the vaults are wooden units measuring 7 ft x 7 ft x 5 ft.
Housing costs on the island
Census American Community Survey figures put the median home value in Urban Honolulu at $843,400 and the median gross rent at $1,823 a month. Across the metro area the median household income is $106,195 and the median gross rent is $2,083. About 51 percent of households in the city itself rent, compared with 37 percent across the whole state.
Those numbers are the reason many families downsize before they go. Island homes and apartments are often smaller than Reno houses, and a shipment is easier to manage when the inventory fits the space. A free in-home estimate with an O'Brien's estimator is the place to decide what ships, what is stored and what is sold. It includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep.

How the move works with O'Brien's
Hawaii moves go through the Bekins network. You book with O'Brien's, the Bekins agent in Sparks, and we coordinate the move from your Reno home through that network. The estimate is itemized and in writing, and an itemized inventory and condition report is made before packing. Your written estimate sets the delivery window, so ask about it when the estimator visits.
All packing supplies are carried at our Sparks office, at 2277 Glendale Ave. If you want an early look at what the move involves, call 775-359-6683 or request a free in-home estimate. The Bekins relationship is explained on our Bekins agent page.
Getting started before you leave Reno
Start with a household inventory, then decide what stays in Nevada. Items you will not need for months can wait in a Sparks vault. Our home inventory builder helps with the list, and the moving checklist generator turns the timeline into dates you can follow.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
