Orders sometimes send you somewhere your furniture cannot follow right away, such as an overseas post or a short tour. Storage fills that gap. Two kinds exist, and it helps to keep them apart.
What NTS is and who decides
Non-temporary storage means storing household goods for a longer stretch while a service member is posted somewhere the goods cannot go. Whether it is authorized for your move depends on your orders and your entitlements, so the answer comes from your installation transportation office or Personal Property Office, not from a mover. Ask your counselor to confirm, in writing if possible, what storage your orders include.
Storage you arrange yourself
Some families need storage the orders do not cover: a gap between leases, a house sale that closes late, or goods you want to keep nearby and reachable. That storage is a private arrangement with the facility you choose. It is billed by that facility, under its own terms.

- Does my counselor confirm storage under my orders, and for how long?
- What inventory and condition report do I receive?
- How much notice is needed to ship my goods out?
- Who do I call if my orders change?
- Which items need special handling, such as a piano or fine art?
Keep the paperwork together
Whichever storage you use, keep the inventory, the condition report and the storage agreement in one folder, with photos of your valuables.
